When you want your glass pipe clean, you want it done quickly and effectively. For the person that is new to owning a glass pipe, getting it clean can be a little intimidating at first. You can not be too hard on it when you clean it or you could potentially break it, but you want it to be clean enough to use. Here are some of the most popular cleaning methods that can be used to make your pipe look like it is new again, from boiling it to using a pipe cleaner kit (and a few methods that you should absolutely stay away from as well.)
The freezer method – The freezer method is fairly straightforward. You simply put your pipe in the freezer for at least 30 minutes. Once the pipe is good and frozen, use a scrapping tool to clean out the bowl of the pipe. The resin inside the pipe will only stay frozen for a few minutes so it’s important to work quickly.
Isopropyl Alcohol method – To clean your pipe using this method, you want to put your pipe inside an airtight bag such as a ziplock bag and fill the bag up with isopropyl alcohol that is 90 to 100% alcohol. Let the pipe sit for at least three hours and then rinse it throughly in order to ensure that all of the traces of alcohol are removed from the pipe.
Isopropyl alcohol with salt – if you would rather not wait several hours for your pipe to soak, then you can put sea salt or coarse salt in the bag with the pipe and the isopropyl alcohol and shake the bag vigorously. The salt will help remove all of the stuck on resin without having to wait for it to dissolve.
Organic pipe cleaner kit – When you purchase an organic pipe cleaner kit, then you will have everything that you need to get your pipe looking squeaky clean again (including instructions.) Organic cleaning kits are typically non toxic, biodegradable, non abrasive, and alcohol free. These are all qualities that you really want to have in a cleaner that you are planning on smoking out of. You should treat your glass pipe the same way that you would treat a plate that you are planning on eating off of.
Boil it – you can carefully boil your pipe in order to clean the pipe, but beware that this will create a very pungent odor in your home.
Use rubbing alcohol, nail polish remover, or bleach or any other cleaners that have toxic chemicals in them. Remember that this is a pipe and the goal is ultimately to inhale from this piece, so the last thing you want to do is take the risk that there is a still of bit of those chemicals still clinging to the pipe when you use it. Really the best and most reliable cleaning method is to buy a pipe cleaner kit from your local smoke shop, but if you need an alternative you can use any one of the above options.
